The city of Jaipur is the capital of the Indian state of Rajasthan and is only a few hours drive from Delhi. The city is a must-see destination simply because of its grandeur. This magnificent city boasts of some of the finest works of architecture. The palaces and the forts will simply leave you awestruck. Built by the then sovereign of Amber, Sawai Jai Singh, Jaipur is truly regal in its look. The city is surrounded by walls and there is only seven gates through which you can enter inside the city. Although the walls have hardly any importance today, it played a very crucial role in the days of yore when the Mughal kingdom and its imperialistic ambitions threatned the very existance of smaller states.
Jaipur is often called "The Pink City" and this nomenclature too has behind it a history. During the visit of the Prince of Wales in the year 1905-06, there was a crying need for the city to be painted to become presentable to its distinguished guests. Shortage of any other color, however, forced the painter to paint the whole city pink. Jaipur has a timeless appeal about it. Its colorful markets, beautiful handlooms, beautifully laid out gardens and most importantly, its fascinating monuments are worth the admiration. The people are cheerful and friendly. The clothes are all multicolored and you will simply love the gorgeous look of it.
The best time to visit the city is between September and April. Being just 262 km away from Delhi, it is very easily accessible by road, rail and air. You can also visit Jaipur aboard the Palace On Wheels. This is a luxury train and you will not forget the experience in a hurry. The palaces of sandstone and the forts of the time when Rajput warriors fought till death still remains the prime tourist attraction.
